Indigo Deli-cious – Khushbu Thadani

Indigo Deli-cious

Although I’ve blogged about a few eating spots in Mumbai like the creperie Suzette or fine-dining restaurant The Table, I am yet to blog about one of my all-time favorites: Indigo Deli.  Don’t be fooled by the name: although they do retail cold cuts & cheeses from around the world, salads and freshly baked breads, Indigo Deli is a full-service gourmet hub.

It’s rare to find a restaurant which offers both more down-to-earth fare like burgers, all-day breakfast and pizzas alongside dishes which appeal to the more refined palate such as risottos, pastas, and grills.  Normally I hate extensive menus but Indigo Deli is one of the few exceptions.  Whereas restaurants that boast a huge array of dishes usually compensate with mediocre quality, Indigo Deli nails it on both ends.  I know I’m not alone when I say their food consistently serves fresh, delicious food.  In other words, Indigo Deli is reliable.  If you do ever get the chance to try Indigo Deli (Mumbai locals- you have no excuse) and you’re really stuck on what to order, here are some of my favorites:

  • Customised sandwich based on their meat & cheese selection
  • Fusili in a sun-dried tomato sauce with goat cheese & olives
  • Blackened Salmon Burger
  • Roasted Mushroom & Tofu Burger
  • Grilled Chicken Breast with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy

For what it’s worth, I would definitely recommend ordering off their daily specials menu.  The dishes always sound so elaborate and the waiters are more than happy to cater to the annoying customers like me make alterations.    A friend from high school was actually visiting Mumbai last week and there was no way she was leaving before trying Indigo Deli. We both decided to roll with the specials:

To share:

Mixed greens, cucumber, olives, grilled figs & chilli sambal in fruity balsamic dressing

Her order:
Green apple & mint slush

Lamb confit with cauliflower shallot mash, seared greens and pineapple apricot compote

My order:
Black salt & garlic rubbed grouper with tomato pilaf, grilled vegetables & cilantro cream

Given my aversion to cilantro, that chunk of fish quickly found its way to my friend's plate

And if she didn’t have her heart set on some last-minute kulfi,  I would have ordered these for dessert:

Their choc chip cookies are baked to order and trust me, the 20-minute wait is definitely worth it.  I’ve eaten many cookies in my day but very few warrant the description “insane”- these make the cut!

My only pet peeve with Indigo Deli is that the service isn’t always up to mark.  Fortunately their mouth-watering food and buzzing, yet relaxed, atmosphere more than makes up for it!  As much as I wish I was getting compensated for this review, sadly I am not.  So take my word when I say that if you want a restaurant that is casual yet delicious and worth every rupee, Indigo Deli is your best bet!

What is the “Indigo Deli equivalent” in your city?
